Interim Pastor

David & Sylvia Cleeland

Born in September 1942, the son of a career United States Marine Corps officer, David grew up in a diverse military community. The first three years of his secondary education were in Hawaii, and in 1960 he graduated from high school in McLean, Virginia. Following this graduation, he matriculated to Wake Forest University where he earned the Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in History. Upon his graduation from Wake Forest, he was commissioned in the United States Marine Corps where he served on active duty for the next twenty years. His Marine Corps career included duty in the Republic of Vietnam, assignment to various command positions from platoon to battalion level, duty at sea aboard the USS Saratoga as Commanding Officer of the Marine Detachment, a General Officer’s personal staff as Aide-de-Camp, and as a Marine Division level staff officer. David retired from the Marine Corps in July 1985 with the rank of Major.

In January 1976, through the ministry of the First Baptist Church of Oceanside, California, David became a Christian at the age of thirty-three. He experienced a call to vocational Christian service in 1979 while stationed in Augusta, Georgia as the active duty advisor to the Marine Corps Reserve Unit. Within a few months, David along with his family, was transferred to Okinawa, Japan where he had the opportunity to work for three years in a Southern Baptist English language church on the foreign mission field, concurrent with his military service. Following his retirement from the Marine Corps in 1985, David entered the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary where he earned the Master of Divinity degree with a major in Theology, and the Master of Religious Education degree with a concentration in Pastoral Leadership and Administration. David has served pastorates in Louisiana and Florida.

In April 1995, David was elected as the Director of Missions for the Miami Baptist Association, a multilingual, multiethnic, multicultural association of three hundred-fifty churches and missions in Miami-Dade County, Florida. In 2004 David left the Miami Baptist Association to become the founding pastor of a new church start in Homestead, Florida, where he remained until his retirement in December 2012. During his time in Florida, David was active in the Miami community serving on four of the Boards of Baptist Health South Florida. From 2004-2007 he served as Vice-Chairman, and from 2008-2010 he served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees. In addition, he taught for thirteen years as an adjunct professor at the Baptist Theological Center of the Americas, an extension of the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.

David has shared this journey with his life partner, his wife, Sylvia. They have been married for fifty-four years. Together they have been privileged to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ in Asia, Europe, Africa, Central America, the Caribbean Islands, and across the United States. They have two daughters, eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. David and Sylvia have been members of Hillcrest Baptist Church in Louisville, Kentucky since January 2013.
